Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases in the Netherlands. We distinguish type 1 and type 2. The majority of the patients suffers from type 2, also called adult-onset diabetes. If this is the case, the body does not make enough insulin. Treatment with medication and special attention for lifestyle is very important to stabilize the sugarlevel in the blood.

Both a high and a low amount of sugar can be dangerous for your health. Problems concerning eyes, feet and bloodvessels can occur because of deviating sugar levels.

Diabetes care by De Doc

Patients with diabetes in our practice are invited 4 times a year for a check up. These check ups are done by a nurse practitioner. She cooperates with one of the general practitioners. In advance of the check up, you will receive a letter to invite you for a blood test. During the check up, the last period of time will be evaluated and the bloodlevels will be discussed. There is special attention to diet and lifestyle, and if necessary your medication will be adjusted. Furthermore, every year the feet will be checked. Every 2 years a check up of the eyes is performed. Together with the nurse practitioner goals are set to keep you healty. She can give tips and advices for daily life.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD is a chronic lung condition which causes a gradual reduction in lung capacity. This results in being out of breath, having low levels of oxygen in the blood and being tired. Smoking is an important, but not the only, cause of this illness. Early detection, and cessation of smoking, greatly reduces the detoriation of lung capacity.

Treatment of this disease will be multi disciplinary with the GP, POH, physiotherapist, and the dietician.

Having a high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood glucose or a family history of cardio vascular illnesses increases the chance of cardio vascular complications in the future. This includes a stroke, kidney illness of a myocardial infarction. Regular check ups and when necessary life style interventions and medication reduces this risk.

More than 20% of the Dutch population has had to deal with fear and/or a depression once in their life. De Doc Huisartsen and the nurse practitioners for mental health are trained by the Trimbos institute for their approach of fear and depression. This results in a quick recognition and improved treatment of fear and depression.

During the dark winter months many people suffer from what is called a “winter depression”. During this period people might feel fatigued and down and this is due to a decreased exposure to sunlight.

Chrono biological light therapy is a therapy in which you will be exposed to a specific form of ultra-violet light during 30 minutes for 5 days in a row. This resets the biological clock (melatonin – serotonin) and this will result in a reduction (or disappearance) of the symptoms. This treatment is evidence based.

Nowadays elderly live indepently in their own home for a longer time. Also as their vulnerability increases. De Doc Huisartsen has the aspiration to create a situation in which this is possible, together with the elderly and other caregivers.

Within a steady team of general practitioners, (practice) nurses, consultants for elderly, pharmacists and geriatric specialists we optimalise the (medical) care for vulnerable elderly in a home situation and keep an eye on their quality of life.

Do you have a new relationship and questions about your sexual health? Then make an appointment for consultation. Nurse practitioner Geertien Kreek or Marije Berkel does consultations within the practice. They are specially trained for this and holds consultations under the supervision of GP N. Stevens.

The consultation takes approximately 20 minutes and is reimbursed from the basic insurance. Laboratory tests (if indicated) are part of the deductible excess

On Thursday morning an employee of the “Helpdesk geldzaken” will be present at the practice (Boomsluiterskade 299). You can come here with all questions about money and insight into your financial situation; Perhaps you want to save more money? Or you aren’t sure wether you receive the right surcharges. And what if you expect life changes (you become a parent, you are moving away, loose your job, get divorced…). You might expect changes in your income and expences as well. If you have questions about this, the “Helpdesk geldzaken” is willing to help you!

The “Helpdesk geldzaken” is is available by appointment on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can walk in freely between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

A vasectomy is sterilization for men.

It is a so-called minor surgical procedure that can be performed by an experienced doctor, just in the general practice.

The vas deferens is examined on both sides, making the man infertile and therefore unable to father any more children.

The procedure falls outside the scope of basic care. This means that the costs, like other contraception, are not reimbursed by the health insurer.

So you pay for this yourself.

What the procedure entails and what risks are involved will be discussed by your doctor.

At the Doc this can be scheduled on Wednesday morning, the procedure takes about 30-45 minutes.

The costs of the procedure are €300 and can be paid by pin at the reception (for the fertility check after the procedure, semen is sent to an external lab and this still charges costs, estimated at €40-50)

Every Wednesday morning a general practitioner and a physiotherapist organize consultations together. During these consultations they work together to help patients with musculo-skeletal problems. Examples of medical issues are knee, spine and shoulder problems and sports injuries. Thanks to the cooperation of the general practitioner and physiotherapist you can be diagnosed faster. During this consultation you receive advices and a suitable treatment can be started quickly.

A podiatrist from Voetencentrum Wender is present at the boomsluiterskade 299 on three Mondays every month. A podiatrist is an expert in foot related problems and aims to make the body move better or to make movement easier. The main focus is to solve and prevent problems regarding walking and standing. To do so, the podiatrist can examine feet, knees, hips and lower back and offer treatment if needed. Examples of treatments are custom made insoles, (medical) taping, shoe advice, training, orthoses and more.

A podiatrist is also involved in the treatment of foot problems related to diabetes and rheumatic diseases. The main goal of a podiatrist in this matter, is to prevent wounds. The podiatrist tries to find what causes pressure points or friction on the feet and to take it away if needed. To do so, the podiatrist offers pressure-reducing treatment, shoe advice and self-care instructions, but also collaborates with other healthcare professionals.

Within Stichting Nieuw Centrum, general practices De Doc and Haanstra cooperate with other primary caregivers in the area. Within this cooperation they have made agreements about treatment of patients with several medical issues. These agreements are described in different care programs and a regularly evaluated.
